Dubrovnik,Grebeni (Reef islet) - wreck Taranto
DEPTH: 23-53 meters
CURIOSITIES: well preserved wreck of transportation ship
DIFFICULTY: advanced divers only
DESCRIPTION:
Warship Taranto was built in 1912 and was under Austro-Hungarian command. It was equipped with machineguns which, later on, were replaced with cannons. After the World War I it fell to the hands of Italian navy and they converted it into a transportation ship. It sunk in 1943, having struck a mine in front of the Reef islet. Wreck today lies at the end of the underwater reef. The wreck bow is leaning against an underwater reef; body of the ship is broken and is at the sea bottom.
The stern of the wreck lies at the 22 meters depth. You can tell remains of the rail and upper deck, little further is mast and is tilted. It is overgrown by sponges and soft corals and is wrapped in the remains of fishers net. By swimming toward the ship stern it gets darker, sonar indicates 50 meters. Stern has almost sunk completely into the sea mud. Around are scattered ship cargo remains, ropes and two tractors on which you can even sit and pretend that you are driving it in a big blue. Below the stern you can encounter with bigger groupers while smaller specimens abide among ship engine remains.
